Should art have any limitations?

The discussion about what art is and can be has always been a hot topic in the art industry. There are few rules for artists when it comes to their own works, and to “put” works in the art field happens all the time without many boundaries or limitations.

Recently the media covered a shocking case in the Norwegian art industry. It´s no secret that the Oslo commune has a large art collection, but they were hiding the fact that the collection got so big that it went out of their control. Kulturetaten had the responsibility for the storage of the works, but 1stof September this year they presented a report of their standing point…

The report could tell us that 3852 art works had gone missing, and among them are 23 of Norwegian artist Per Kleiva´s artworks. Oslo Commune has stored their art collection in bathrooms and basements and not in good conditions. How could the commune let this go over hand and should the art industry have some reasonable limits?

This situation shows that Oslo commune didn’t have the capacity and space to store all their works and it ended up with bad conditions for the paintings and sculptures. They gave to much room for participation to be a part of their art collection. For now it seems like the collection consists of pieces that are not considered legitimate art, referring to the term “Junk art market”. If they would have higher limits on the work of art, the collection wouldn’t expand to this size, and they would been able to control a much smaller, but also perhaps a more exclusive collection of arts.
