Hotel and museum hybrid

Clarion Hotel Oslo is a newly opened, unique art hotel in downtown Oslo. The hotel’s location is one of the highest developed, modern and up and coming districts in Oslo, which is called Bjørvika, but commonly known as Barcode. The hotel is more specifically located at Munch Brygge in Bjørvika with the new Munch Museum and the Opera house as one of its closest neighbors.

As the location’s name is Munch Brygge, the hotel features Edvard Munch’s paintings, as well as other local artists. This is one of the main reasons why I chose Clarion Hotel Oslo as my topic for today. In my opinion it is very interesting that the hotel is focusing on art, as well as being a new and modern hotel. This is a market that Nordic Choice Hotels have not adventured in yet, which means that it opens up for a completely new target group.

Clarion Hotel Oslo does a great job in understanding and arranging a whole new concept, which is specifically tailored to their desired target group. They want to attract an adult target group with an exclusive hotel, in one of the cities most exclusive districts, as well as art from one of this country’s most known artists, Edvard Munch. If the hotel was going for a younger target group, it would be better to focus on street art, or modern artists. This is one of the main reasons I believe they do a great job with tailoring the hotel to the specific target group.

In the summer, Oslo has a lot of tourists and a lot of them wants to visit the different types of museum. Their desires range from Viking museum, all the way to different types of art museums, like for example the Munch Museum. By using the hotel as a small museum experience, the hotel can attract a lot of these tourists. This is especially a very good alternative for tourists that wants to experience as much as possible, in a short amount of time.

For a museum it is essential that they get to know their different types of audiences, and tailor the experience to their target audience. For example, if the museum is focused on adults of age 30-50, they should probably have a playground, or something for children. Since the target group for this hotel is older adults, it can be more formal and more elegant than other hotels. And that is also why their desired art is Edvard Munch, because he is more appreciated by the older audience, than the younger generations.

To finish this post off I would like to applaud the new hotel in their efforts to combine a traditional museum with a hotel experience. In my opinion this is very unique, at least in Norway, and I am a big fan of their work.
