Nordic is a design organization based in Oslo. They have dedicated individuals who works for them from all over the world. They have offices in Copenhagen, London and Reykjavik and are involved in a lot of projects in various countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
Nordic was established in 1979 with the name “Narud Stokke Wiig (NSW)”. In 1992 they changed their name to Nordic emerges before again changing their name to Nordic in 2012. It´s been said that Nordic is specialized with the likes of airports and hospitals.
Nordic has been involved with plenty big projects and has won many awards for their architecture. Here is some of the projects they´ve worked with: Bergen Airport (2009-2017), Istanbul Airport (2013-2016) and Nanchang waves (2019).
Nordic is an architecture design company. The concept with architecture design is to focus on the elements or components of a system and coordinate them into a functional whole. A general term to use for the architecture is that it describes buildings and other structure. Now we talked a little bit about the word architecture, but what is design? There are different ways to understand the word “design”. Actually, there is many right answers to this question. For me, the closest answer most be, “Design solves problems. So it fits and foremost about meeting the needs of people. It acts as a problem-solved issue by gathering together different perspectives, experiences and drawing insight from these to inform the development of new ideas and the delivery of new and innovative solutions” (Design Council, 2018). When we combine the concrete definition of architecture and design, I would say that it´s a problem solver for buildings and other structures.
The most unique thing about Nordic is that they have a lot of small windows and stripes in their design. They also have a lot of big rooms with a lot off space. I don´t think the last part is unique, but very modern. Architecture is a very though market to be part of, but I think that Nordic is one of the best in Europe. Their biggest competitor is Snøhetta. Snøhetta is not only just a great architecture company, but it´s even from the same country as Nordic. Nordic claim that they have six set of values that helps them in their work and thinking
- Transparency
- Reponsibility
- Integrity
- Commitment
- Expertise
- Rewarding
I think these set of values helps them a lot on how they compete. I think it sets a standard for all they employees and makes their customers more comfortable and relaxed when they hire them. It helps them to know exactly what to expect. The reason why I wanted to write about Nordic is because I really like their work, and specially the stairs “Nanchang waves” that they build in 2019 really caught my attention.
I hope you liked this week post! See you next time!
