BANKSY

MINECRAFTKID

For my blog post I have decided to write about an artist who goes by the name Banksy. Banksy is a very controversial street artist who brings up a lot of debate with his paintings. In this blog post I’ll be writing about a case from 2003.

I found this news article in the guardian. They wrote about a man from Bristol who occasionally rented his house out to students. One day, one of the students asked him if a friend of his could paint his wall, so he said yes. Little did he know that it was Banksy, who painted a 32-foot mural on the side of his house.

The interesting part about this article and this case, is that the man who owned the house were currently trying to sell it, it was worth about 1.2 million pounds, but people didn’t seem to get interested, some even said they wouldn’t buy it because it had graffiti on it.

I’m not too sure where I can put Banksy as an artist, personally I would say he’s a part of the inclusive circuit, because I think that for him, it’s not about the money, it’s about sending a message, whether it being his political views, or something else like quotes.

As Banksy is anonymous, it’s hard for us, the audience, to validate whether he meets the criteria as an artist, but I think that if you ask artists around the world, you will find that most of them will say he’s one of the greatest artists of our generation, and that the anonymity just adds value to his work.

I would put Banksy in the Avant-garde art (recognized) group, as he is a very well-known street artist, known all around the globe, and his work sells for a lot of money.

There’s a lot of people interested in Banksy’s work, one man even tried to buy the mural and ship the whole wall to California. I’d guess that the typical buyers of Banksy paintings are Home collectors, people want his work, and they want to display it. But since Banksy usually tags public property, it’s difficult to get your hands on his work, since it’s either often destroyed, or claimed by the people owning the property.

I find it hard to value Banksy’s work, and put him in a specific category, precisely because he’s not the average artist, he makes controversial political paintings, and remains anonymous to the world. I think we should enjoy his work, and accept the fact that some things remains mysteries. If you think about it, would his work be this famous if it wasn’t for his anonymity?
