Commenting on jircnivrune’s post – Categorizing art

By: williamsburroughs

In this blogpost jircnivrune writes about the difficulty in categorizing art and artists. They write about the how the current art market is and how it has evolved through time. One of their main point throughout the text is that the art markets are closely similar to that of regular markets. And the one thing that controls these markets, is simply supply and demand. The more people who are interested in an art piece, the more valuable the piece becomes.

It seems like ircnivrune has a good understanding of the art market, along with the regular market. They further write about the quite unique part of the art market. How an artist can live their whole life in struggle and poverty. How an artist can go unrecognized and unvalued until the day they pass away. And with this passing, the artists work suddenly has a value and is appreciated by the public. In other words, the supply stops and the demand increases.

This becomes the point of jircnivrune text, where they finish of with the notion:

Even though it may start in a lower tier art market, there is no way of knowing that it won’t be able to rise to the higher tiers.”

The text has a good structure, with natural paragraphs so it’s easy to read and understand. I’m missing a few visual perspectives on the subject, maybe a few pictures could help the readers keep their interest a bit more. Jircnivrune talked specifically about Vincent van Gogh and mentioned different art markets from the syllabus, of which, Avant-Garde-, Branded-, Alternative-, and Junk art market. And how most artist belonging to the Branded- and Avant-Garde art market most likely started as an artist in the Alternative- and Junk art market. This is a valuable point that fit the general feel of the text and gives an example of the unique part of the art market I talked about earlier. In addition to the illustration of the different art markets, an understanding of the firms and consumers could also be a good part of the syllabus to add to the post. They could have written more about the Auction houses, dealers and art fairs, not just the artists. Also, the consumers like public museums, private foundations and private collectors.

In conclusion the text is well write and the student shows good understanding of the subject, with great vocabulary. In my opinion the text is easy to follow along with, and I appreciate the use of abnormal words that shows a good writing-ability and vocabulary. It’s an important subject and I can see that you have put work into your post.
