We don’t always think about it, but we surround ourselves with design everyday, from the door we open every day to the coffee cup we drink from in the morning. It´s not only about the outer looks of the products, but also the functionality. This is how German Furniture Company Extremis describes their design, and how this is connected to good design. But what is the difference between good and bad design, and what does it bring to the table for the community?
Design comes in many ranges and has been solving problems for individuals, but also the communities as a unit. Extremis is a brand that has been focusing on the community. The brand is founded by designer Dirk Waynates and is a furniture brand that mainly produces products for the community such as outdoor tables and chairs. For example they created a picnic table called Virus. The table has a seating solution so people can have the opportunity to gather around without losing uniformity. Their vision is “To create ideas that are loved that are loved for their personality, embrace their quality, and cherished of their impact, as true tools for togetherness”.
When we purchase a product we get drawn to the design, and in most cases this is the looks of the product. In my opinion we can divide this sight in two, an external view and a functional view. For example we first see the visual in the design product, and further on we are starting to notice what function the design has and how it can solve our needs. So what decides if a product is good or bad design, and does Extremis fulfill the components?
One essential to good design is that it fulfils its function and does this efficiently. The virtual beauty is not enough, but it also has to have a purpose and functionality to have the opportunity to be assessed. Another key to good design is that it have to useful in practice or simple for the consumer to use. Extremis focuses on the solution, necessity and usefulness. They take these factors as starting points and their ideas are based on these three elements.

Their projects and designs are often set in a public area, for example tables and chairs in cafeterias or outdoors. This is areas that are open for people in the community, and is both free and simple to use. Their visual design is aesthetic, appealing and have the ability and room for interaction with others. They also makes furniture designs that fits home for the daily life. Extremis´s vison and ideas makes it easy for ordinary people to experience and use.
