Most people have at least one TV in their house. Fewer of them own a SmartTV. What could the reason be? Price? Useless functions? Lack of privacy? There could be many reasons. How necessary is it to have a SmartTV vs a regular TV?
What characterizes good design when it comes to the TV’s? Well, it has to be useful, but it also has to be user-friendly, have good abstract qualities, which is a “super normal” object: useful, appropriate, modest, robust, enduring and should radiate something good, as Jasper Morrison said. An example of an optional element of good design is originality. Design is often at its most seductive and most convincing when introducing us to the new.
Integrity, symbolic and structural, is important when it comes to good design. Unless it has integrity, no design project can be deemed to be good, however useful, beautiful or innovative it might be.
What does all this mean when it comes to our subject –The Smart TV?
All of it is important when we want a Smart TV. Our main reason to buy one, mostly, is because it has new technology compared to a regular TV. We have different needs than we had some years ago. Technology has been way more innovative compared to a few years ago, and the consequences is that we want more, better, and “easy to use” and it’s interesting to see how far we’ve come. When the first Smart TVcame out in 2008, it had a lot of new functions that a normal TV didn’t have, for example checking news, weather, stock prices and watch Youtube. Later, it was possible to watch Netflix, use Wi-fi, play games, use apps, voice commands and motion control. Now in 2019, some Tv’s can even analyze the room to give the best optimal sound and analyze every scene from the movie you’re watching to do the same.
With new technology, itcomesnot without problems sadly. We have a Smart TVin our home. It delivers good picture quality, includes streaming apps, and last, but not least, the size of the TV. The motion control system on our TV is popping up at random occasions, and the mouse pointer is suddenly moving at random places on the TV, which is annoying. The voice command system needs someimprovement. When our dog is barking, the TV will automatically detect it and lower the volume, the reason for that I think is that our dog is making a high pitch noise. Our TV is a few years old now, so it may have been improved.
So, will a smart TV characterize good design? I think so yes, because it’s useful and have good abstract qualities. Most people would prefer to watch Netflix on a big screen at home. A TV will last for several years, if treated carefully, and you don’t have to buy the most expensive one if you want to just enjoy entertainment.
