Have you ever seen a painting or a sculpture in a museum and thought “ What is this, and this is stupid“? I`m guilty of that, but that was a long time ago, when I was younger. Because when I was younger, I didn’t realise what kind of value it had. And what kind of value am I talking about? Value as in money? Not at all! Well, one can say that the word “Value“ is the origin and motivation of all economic behaviour. But if you look at it, from a different perspective, the world Value, can mean something completely different.
I was reading this article, that was about abstract art, and what the point of it was. The article then stated what abstract art was, and its history. So, what kind of value can abstract art give you? Well, it can give you a culture value, or more specific a symbolic value. And that is a value surely based on meaning. Like what does that artwork mean to you. So, in that sense the word “value“ is all about the art. So, reading this article, the author said something about that abstract art, is all about you, and what you see. And that it basically gives the persons the freedom to see, what they want to see. So, it will have a different value for everybody. What some people say is garbage, some other will say are masterpieces. And that is what I consider to be good art. If everybody had the same symbolic value on a specific artwork, then it wouldn’t be art, not in my eyes anyway. Good art should create a discussion, that is what makes it special and unique. Therefore, nobody is wrong, when they say they don’t like the artwork, they just have a different value to them. The same thing goes about for example flavours on an ice cream, there are just certain flavour that people won’t like, no matter how much you tell them, that they are wrong. The same thing can be said about art too.

So, as we can see the word “value“ can have different meanings in the art and design industry. The main thing, when it comes to artwork, is very special to each individual. You have the choice to like or dislike something, without being wrong. And yes, the word “value“ must also be connected with monetary value, in terms of costs, prices, profit and capital, too make sure the industry goes around.
