Why do male artists earn more than female artists?

Value creation is defined as when a business generates value. Over some time, companies have learned that it´s not only revenue made from stocks etc, that determines whether a business is successful and/or generates value, but rather the value creation, making the ideas, people, and the overall brand more of a factor to what generates the value. In this case i´ve decided to talk about why male artist make more money that female artist, and discuss some of the reasons behind it.

Why does male artist make more than female artist? There are many answers to that question, according to a study performed by Mari Torvik Heian, a scientist at Telemarkforsking.

Working hours. Studies show that men work more than women in general, this obviously results in more work done by the male artist, which provides greater exposure, some of the bigger reasons why men work more than the women are simply kids, women spend more time with their kids than men. But since men get paid more, they also get the opportunity to put more time into their work, resulting in getting more work done. It´s very common to have a second job when working as an artist, because it´s so hard to “make” it.

But should money be a motivational factor to the artists? Bourdieu said that the artist should not be motivated by any external purposes. Which makes money an evil motivator for the artist.  (Bourdieu).

Men usually have a bigger network as well, and sometimes know people in higher positions, they´re also more forward when they ask for something, like a raise or more funding, or whatever it might be, which gives them a slight advantage over the ones that already are undermined in the business who might not want to jeopardize anything by asking for more, which is the case for many women.

Even though I personally think equality is improving in most fields, I can agree that the old-fashioned ways around art is keeping women from earning the same as men, galleries want to go with big names, and rarely expose new names as they also need to make money. Perhaps we will see change in the future, but as of now, I don´t think we will.
