Can a lamp be something more than just a lamp?

The design organisation Ateljé Lyktan is a Swedish lamp design company. Already in 1936 they started designing lamps in Åhus in Sweden. For more than 80 years they have been designing innovative and award winning lamps for private households, public buildings and areas. Such as 16.000 lamps for the Olympics in Munich in 1972. Lots have happened since they beginning in 1936 and Ateljén are constantly working on being innovative and to develop their products.

During the past years the world have realized the importance of taking care of the environment, and Ateljén is no exception. Already in 2008 they started to produce LED lamps, and they keep going in the environmental friendly direction. We all know that lighting uses energy. Therefore Ateljén strive to design lamps that uses as little energy as possible, but without compromising on the quality or the light. For Ateljén it is important to save resources at every point from production to consume.

The design industry is separated into several different categories. Ateljén falls into the category for furniture design. Even though it is not furniture such as sofas or tables they design they still design lamps to decorate with and to make your home more functional.

Furniture is something you can decorate your home with and that is beautiful. It has to be something that is not screwed into the wall, like a painting is. With its unique and innovative design Ateljén stands out and they are more than just a regular lamp. They for example have a lamp called “Pluggie” which allows you to charge to USB items while you also use the lamp for lighting. Because of their unique design the lamps can perhaps compete not only against other lamps, but also against art. That is because the lamps stand out and they are something more than just light. The design makes the lamps stand out in the crowd.

As I already mentioned Ateljén does not only compete in the market for households. They also create lamps for public areas, such as street lighting. Also they design and illuminate places like offices, schools and libraries, hotels and McDonald´s to mention some places. This results in plenty of exposure of their products to the consumers. Which is an advantage, because people remember seeing their lamps in the back of their heads and it increases the chances of the consumers buying the lamps for their private homes. When you walk the streets in Scandinavia it is hard to not become exposed to their products because they are almost everywhere. So if it wasn’t love at first sight with the lamps, it might become after a while when you have been exposed to the lamps over a while and you learn to like them.

Ateljén is concerned about being something more, to stand out in a good way. They want to embrace the creativity and see options. They want to combine shape and function and always try to solve challenges the best possible way.
